Mr Spray Founder of Kingswood Methodists - 50 years Celebration in 1989 Mr Spray founded Kingswood Methodist Church in 1939 at his home in Kingswood Road. From a newspaper cutting: OVER 200 people assembled at 14 Kingswood Road, Wollaton as the clock was turned back 50 years for “former ‘police superintendent Bill Spray of Kingswood Road, Wollaton. In 1939, Bill and his late wife Eileen, started a Sunday school in their own home and Kingswood Methodist Church was born. RETURNED Fifty years to the day, former Sunday school children and members of the present day church and Sunday school returned to Bill's home to give thanks and pay their respects to the ‘father’ of Kingswood. The Sunday service ‘89 began at Kingswood Road where short devotions took place followed by hymn singing before a march to the new church on Lambourne Drive, Wollaton. An emotional Mr Spray, pictured above with the Rev Barrie Cooke and guests at the event, said: “This was a great day, the fulfillment of a dream and one that my dear wife would have been proud of. This was a proud moment in my life and the turnout was unbelievable. I am a very happy man.” Mr Spray’s garden made an idea backdrop for the service which was conducted by the church minister, Rev Cooke, and by (Mr Spray?) himself. CELEBRATION He read from Isaiah, before the joyful gathering, having sung “Come And Join The Celebration”,“Morning Has Broken”, and “"Now Thank We All Our God" set off for the church for a service of thanks giving. The church’s minister, Rev Barrie Cooke, said: “Wollaton and Kingswood Methodists owe a debt of gratitude to a kindly dedicated man, “The efforts of he and his wife will always be remembered.”
